The 6-week furniture design studio was taught in Copenhagen, Denmark by Erling Christoffersen and Peter Johansen through DIS Study Abroad in Scandinavia.*
After many hours (and a few power tool lessons later), I successfully hand-built The Alt. Chair. Standing for alter, alternate, and alternative. Inspired by Børge Mogensen's Spanish Chair, "Alt." is a celebration of materiality and adaptability using both ash wood and canvas. The three detachable stretchers allow for both the seat and back to be removed and exchanged with a new color or pattern in the future. Having an interior designer's mindset, I was driven by how the chair could interact with the spaces around it. Having the capability to switch the color, texture, and pattern of the seat or back meant this chair could adapt to match any space.
One chair with endless possibilities.
*This project was chosen to represent the Fay Jones School design program for the renewal of CIDA Accreditation. It was also featured in a student-built furniture display within the design building for the Fall 2024 semester.
